Jah Mex and the Translators are out to play a soundtrack for the soul. There’s a strong roots reggae influence apparent in the music they play, along with a message intended for a “Conscious Revolution”. However, the versatility and high energy of this Southern California band also sheds flavors of jazz, rock and soul.
Front man and songwriter, Jah Mex, released his debut album, Firm Soundation in 2009. It was produced by veteran reggae bassist, Fully Fullwood. In 2010 Mex collaborated with members of the Soul Syndicate Band including Tony Chin, Santa Davis and Fully Fullwood to record “Dub You” and “Like a Lion”. Both singles will be on his follow up album in 2012, also featuring the Translators with new tracks including "Soul Sliding" and "Opperation Youth".
Members of the Translators include Gino Bareno on bass and harmony vocals, Aviv Cohen on drums, Super Gong on guitar and harmony vocals, Keith Wyman on keyboards, Ras Small on percussion, and Jah Mex on lead vocals, keyboards, and Melodica. Plans for 2011 and 2012 include the Deeper Education Tour, which will take them to colleges and music festivals along the west coast United States.
Outside of singing and songwriting, Jah Mex has played keyboards for well noted artists including Eek A Mouse, Marcia Griffiths and Tippa Irie. He’s also worked with Los Angeles based reggae acts, Boom Shaka, Detour Posse and Upstream.
